DESIGN MUSEUM

The Design Museum in Kensington, London is the world’s leading museum of contemporary design and architecture. This exciting new museum offers visitors three times more space than its previous location at Shad Thames and will welcome more than 700,000 visitors in its first year.

Our initial brief was to provide strategic management and design consultancy services to the museum to support their relocation to their new home on Kensington High Street.

Prior to starting any design work, we undertook a strategic options appraisal in conjunction with the museum’s project team to consider the options for a wide range of food and beverage facilities including a destination restaurant, visitor café, members’ lounge, auditorium and event spaces.

This led on to a procurement process to source a catering partner through the development of an initial prospectus and RFP which we issued to a long list of potential restaurateurs and operators. Our final task was to assist with contractual negotiations with the preferred catering partner.

The strategic options appraisal considered the wider vision and objectives for the new museum against the specific implications for food and beverage services. Through a combination of stakeholder consultations, financial modelling and assessment of design/logistical considerations we worked with the Design Museum and John Pawson Architects to agree the optimum food and beverage solution.

This enabled us to utilise our detailed knowledge of the Design Museum’s strategic objectives and expectations, coupled with the physical parameters of the building, to lead the process to procure a suitable catering partner.
